Essential Take Away: The Essentials are Always Essential
I started hoarding toilet paper way before it was cool. One of my “secrets” of keeping my sanity is Amazon subscribe and save. Each month a case of toilet paper shows up at my door and I don’t ever think about it. I hadn’t thought about it in years. Until this week. I’m still O.K. in the toilet paper area of life. However, I have been watching the stores and other people. Toilet paper must be an essential item. I think it is also a comfort item. Fine, let the end of the world come so long as I have toilet paper and chocolate.

While thinking about toilet paper, (because who isn’t?) I came across this from the student manual of the Doctrine & Covenants (another book of scripture for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) One of the sections of this institute manual is called “How to Escape the Calamities and God’s Judgments.” Well, that sounds promising to me! What can I do?! Here is the answer the book gives: “How can I be numbered among those the Lord will protect? That question is answered very clearly in the Doctrine and Covenants: It is a matter of individual worthiness. The Lord has said, “If ye are prepared ye shall not fear” (D&C 38:30). The preparation needed is to repent, to receive the gospel, and to become sanctified through following its precepts. (see D&C 39:17–18).”
Toilet paper, peanut butter, hand sanitizer and wheat are all well and good. They might even make life a little more comfortable while being quarantined. If I am truly worried about being prepared for the second coming of my Savior, I might want to concentrate a little more on repenting and drawing closer to Him personally. That will require more intense effort than finding toilet paper….. probably.
