Addition, Multiplication… what’s the difference?

Essential Takeaway: Watch your signs!

A couple of weeks ago, I was helping my 3rd grade daughter with her math. She was rushing and not paying as close attention as she should have. She has learned addition, subtraction, multiplication and is working on division. One problem was really giving her grief and after looking at it, the clue I could give her was “watch your signs!” She had assumed all of the problems were multiplication because that is what she had been working on that day. This particular problem happened to be addition. When rushing, a multiplication sign can easily be confused for an addition sign and the solutions are totally different!

How often do we get so caught up in our daily routines that we forget to watch the signs? Most days, I seem to be on auto pilot…which sounds funner than just being in survival mode. We have been given many signs of the times and we have been told what is coming in the future. We have been told to prepare for the return of our Savior. We would be wise to watch our signs and prepare for what we know is coming. I am reminded of the parable of the 10 virgins. The half of the guests  that were prepared for the bridegroom had watched for the signs of his coming and were ready for him. The other half may have been distracted with visiting, eating, dressing up for the wedding party, or simply enjoying the company of those around them. They procrastinated preparation. Or perhaps, they didn’t realize what time it was and didn’t realize how much oil they had burned through because they were not paying attention to the signs.  If we do not watch the signs, we might miss the bridegroom entirely. I am trying to be more aware of the signs as well as develop a closer relationship with my Savior so when He comes, I will not miss the solution. What things are you doing to prepare for the Lord’s coming?
