Unity and Righteous Make a Secret Sauce

Essential takeaway: We know the secret sauce!

Conference Connections

This is election week in the United States. This year (because it’s 2020 and all things are crazy) the election seemed especially intense. I decided the perfect talk for this week is from Elder Cook titled Hearts Knit in Righteousness and Unity. I am a sucker for anything that speaks of our nations founding. I love that Elder Cook mentioned the Constitution of the United States. Elder Cook says: “In our doctrine we believe that in the host country for the Restoration, the United States, the U.S. Constitution21 and related documents,22 written by imperfect men, were inspired by God to bless all people.”

Most importantly, Elder Cooks talks about how we need righteousness and unity and how these two things are connected. My favorite line of his talk is this: “Being righteous is not dependent on each of us having every blessing in our lives at this time.” Wow! How many times do we think that if we are doing everything “right” there will be no trials? We are doing every thing “right” and yet things seem to be wrong? As we strive to be righteous, we will follow God’s commandment to love God and our fellowmen. This will bring about the unity and peace we desire in our families and society.

I think Elder Cook reminds us of the secret to a peaceful and happy society! In 4 Nephi we are told “There was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people.” This my friends is the secret sauce! We each need to love God. Then we share that love with others. I wonder if this secret could be more contagious than a plague?

During this contentious election week, I want to remember we are all children of God and not part of a political party. I choose to pray for all of the leaders of our country and pray we can be united using the secret sauce of God’s love. What is one way this week you are choosing to show your love for God and for your fellowmen?
